"Only someone completely distrustful of all government
would be opposed to what we are doing with surveillance cameras."
- NYC Police Commissioner Howard Safir, 27 July 1999
Vigil Codex is a collaborative cartography platform of surveillance cameras in and around la Place de la République in Paris, aimed at activists, protesters, artists and urban explorers of all kinds. It is open-source, free and editable by all (yes, you!) through the editor.
This project was inspired by the Surveillance Camera Players, the tradition of pirate cartography such as William Dampier's 'Map of the World', the Nuit Debout movement and organisation, and JK Rowling's 'Marauder's Map'. It was developed by Nin Ja in the context of the cloud24.de Seminar by Sereina Rothenberger and Urs Hofer, at the HfG Karlsruhe during the Summer Semester of 2018.
Presented for educational and informational purposes only.
